About Jacob Torres

I am a writer, web developer, and web accessibility consultant located in my beloved home state of Colorado. I studied computer science at Metropolitan State University of Denver, as well as data science and machine learning at Bloom Institute of Technology. I’m a self-starting tech enthusiast with a passion for accessibility in the digital world. I am also a creative fiction writer, and select stories will soon be featured on this site.

Accessibility Consulting

As a blind tech user, I am very familiar with the frustration of needing to use a website or application, only to realize that it doesn’t work for you because it simply wasn’t designed to accommodate your disability. Often people only discover that a product is inaccessible after investing time, money, and hope. My goal is to eliminate this feeling of helplessness and invisibility from the disabled experience.

I have been using assistive tecnology my whole life. In addition to reading braille, I’m proficient with NVDA and JAWS on Windows, Voice-Over on Mac and IOS, and Talkback on Android. In college, I helped my school’s access center evaluate and remediate the accessibility of digital content for students with print disabilities, and I’m experienced performing web accessibility audits using the latest edition of the WCAG.

Programing and Web Development

I graduated in 2022 from Bloom Institute of Technology, where I studied subjects including full-stack web development, data engineering, and machine learning. Before long I became the lead web developer at an amazing AI scheduling startup called Scheduler AI. While there, I contributed many features and solutions to the company, and my team was always happy to accommodate my disability wherever necessary. Still, I encountered significant accessibility challenges in the developer software that I needed to use for my job. It was much slower and more difficult for me to perform the same tasks as my sighted teammates because the tools were not designed with me in mind. As a result, I have a lifelong passion for developing user-friendly web applications and improving the accessibility of developer tools for other disabled engineers.

Primarily I am a Python developer, with work experience building web applications using Django and Flask, and machine learning applications using Python data science libraries. I’m skilled in accessible UI development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript, and am familiar with front-end web frameworks such as React and Angular. On the back-end, I’m most comfortable with Python, Node, and Java, as well as PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases.

Writing

My personal history with writing dates back to my childhood, where my passion for crafting fiction stories first began. I had my mother help me create illustrated books before I was even in pre-school. Since then, I have dedicated myself to honing my writing skills and have continued to pursue my love for storytelling.

I mostly write in the horror and dark fantasy genres, at the moment mainly writing short stories for online publications. To find links to all of my published work, as well as my unpublished writing projects and other writing content, click here!
